4 years ago I finally decided to take the plunge and get a dog. After years of stalking petfinder, rescue websites and craigslist I contacted Happy Hound Rescue of MN about this dog, Clark:

After talking with Lynn, the founder of HHR, she told me that this was not the dog for me but asked me what I was looking for in a dog. Hmmm good question. I told her I wanted a walking buddy, a dog to hang out with me while I gardened etc, and a food motivated dog. Soon after, she sent me some photos and description of a dog that she thought would be an ideal match. Her name was lady and she lived in Southern Ohio in a rural high kill shelter.

Hmmm. Not anything like the dog that I had originally inquired about but I decided to let fate take over and said sure, send her up to Minnesota. If it didn't work out after 2 weeks I could return to HHR.

We met the transport in a parking lot in Fridley on a cold, windy night. My mom and I stood there watching all these people meet their new buddies for the first time. It was very emotional. We kept waiting and waiting for them to announce Lady's name. Of course she was the very last dog to be unloaded from the transport. I could barely see her in the back of the crate, black dog and all. I got her out of the crate and she immediately dove back into the car and ripped open a bag of dog food that had been stored under her crate. (Note to transporters: please don't store dog food under starving dogs crate during transport. Seriously.) It was a bit traumatic. Wondering what I got myself into. She pulled all over the parking lot and wanted to sniff everything in sight. Crazy dog! We managed to get her in the car and headed home with my new dog.

She weighed 30 lbs. It was hard to pet her because of the protruding bones. She was greasy and didn't have much hair. And those nipples! Wonder how many litters of puppies she had!

The first 3 months were very uncertain and shaky. I wasn't sure it was going to work out but I am pretty stubborn and decided to prove to everyone that it would work out. I had some bad experiences with a trainer (some of you already know that story so I will save it for a later post) Olive was scared, reactive and pulled like crazy. Walks were not much fun. Halloween decorations, bags in the street, anything out of the ordinary scared her. She lunged and growled at children. Thankfully I stumbled upon a great little dog forum at Dogwise.com and a core group of dog owners steered me in the right direction. (positive training methods and I read every book I could get my hands on about dogs and dog behavior) I saw changes IMMEDIATELY. Progress happened quickly after that. We started walking at Powderhorn Park and I quickly became popular with the neighborhood dogs because of my pocket full of rotisserie chicken. (counter conditioning ala "Control Unleashed" by Leslie McDevitt) Olive was no longer reactive to dogs and we made tons of friends. The first dog she ever played with was a 6 month old doodle named Sunshine. We signed up for an obedience class and passed with flying colors.

She went on to be an awesome sister to Nellie the cat, a calm and patient trainer for many fosters dogs and a great sister to Leaping Lorna. She has the spunk of a boxer with the reserved, dignified demeanor of a chow.

Olive is definitely my soul dog. I love this dog! Happy Gotcha Day Olive!

Theresa Peltier, the woman that saved Olive died about a year after I got Olive:
Theresa was a petite 68 year old saint who volunteered 80+ hours a week to save the dogs and puppies at Pike County Ohio pound. She physically cleaned cages, bathed puppies, temperament tested dogs, trained and socialized dogs, took pictures, maintained the website, contacted rescues to take dogs, and delivered dogs to rescue almost 7 days a week. She was devoted to the dogs and would do anything for a dog whether from Pike County or other dogs in need in Ohio. Theresa is survived by her husband, four elderly pekinese who need homes, two elderly chihuahuas who need homes, and several other beloved family dogs.
